Quick Snapshot

This isn’t a cute, chubby cat. This is a vintage-style Halloween cat—long, lean, slightly spooky, and full of old-world charm.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn: Black (180 yds), Gold or Cream (5 yds for eyes), Pink (scrap for inner ears)
  • Size G/4.0mm crochet hook
  • 2 vintage-style buttons (amber glass, gold-tone, or dark wood, â…œ-inch)
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Step-by-Step

The Body

  1. With black: Magic ring, 6 sc. (6 sts)
  2. Increase by 6 sts per round to 24 sts.
  3. Work even for 8 rounds.
  4. Arched back: Increase 6 sts on the next round. Work even for 3 rounds. Decrease 6 sts. This creates a subtle hump.
  5. Work even for 6 rounds. Decrease to close. Stuff firmly.

The Head

  1. Magic ring, 6 sc. Increase to 30 sts over 5 rounds.
  2. Work even for 4 rounds.
  3. Decrease to 18 sts. Insert button eyes between rounds 7 and 8. Stuff. Close.
  4. Sew head to body.

Ears (Make 2)

  1. Ch 6. Sc in 2nd ch, hdc, dc, hdc, sc. Fasten off.
  2. With pink, make a smaller inner triangle. Sew inner ear onto outer ear.
  3. Sew ears to head, positioning them wide and slightly tilted.

Legs (Make 4) — Long & Skinny

  1. Magic ring, 6 sc. Work even for 20 rounds. Do not increase. Stuff very lightly.
  2. Sew to body. The front legs should be straight; the back legs should bend slightly at the joint.

Tail

  1. Magic ring, 5 sc. Work even for 25 rounds. Do not stuff. The tail should be posable.
  2. Sew to back. Curve it upward into a classic “Halloween cat” arch.

Finishing

  1. With gold or cream yarn, embroider small iris details around the button eyes.
  2. Embroider a tiny pink nose and a w-shaped mouth with backstitch.
  3. Optional: make a tiny crochet witch hat (black cone + brim) for the cat to wear.

Display perched on a stack of old books or peering out from behind a pumpkin.
