Quick Snapshot

  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Time: 2 hours
  • Yarn: Worsted weight in rust, cream, mustard, or sage

These pumpkins look like they’re wrapped in a cozy cable-knit sweater. The post-stitch ribbing creates deep, textured ridges that catch the light beautifully.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn: Rust or burnt orange (150 yds)
  • Size H/5.0mm crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Cinnamon stick or wine cork (for stem)
  • Jute twine (for wrapping segments)
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Step-by-Step

The Pumpkin Body

  1. Foundation: Ch 31.
  2. Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and each across. (29 dc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 2, turn. FPdc around next st, BPdc around next across, ending with FPdc.
  4. Row 3: Ch 2, turn. BPdc around next st, FPdc around next across (opposite of previous row to continue rib pattern).
  5. Repeat Rows 2–3 until piece measures 12 inches.
  6. Fasten off, leaving 30-inch tail.

Assembly

  1. Seam the short edges together to form a tube.
  2. Thread the long tail through one open end with a running stitch. Pull tight to cinch. Knot securely.
  3. Stuff the pumpkin firmly—really pack it in. Overstuffing here is key because the ribbing needs tension to pop.
  4. Cinch the remaining open end, pull tight, knot.
  5. Segment wraps: Use the remaining tail (or jute twine) to wrap around the pumpkin from top to bottom 5–6 times. Pull each wrap tight to create deep segments. Each wrap should sink into a valley between ribbed ridges.

The Stem

  1. Insert a cinnamon stick into the top opening. If the hole is too large, crochet a small sc circle (6 sc, increase to 12) and sew it around the stem base.

Variation: Mini Sweater Pumpkins

For a mini version, use DK yarn and a G hook. Chain 21, work until piece is 8 inches long. These make great napkin ring toppers or place card holders.

Group 3–5 pumpkins in varying colors (rust, cream, mustard, sage) on a mantel or dining table for a high-end farmhouse look.
