This ghost pattern ditches the cartoonish sheet-ghost look for something more refined. Lace-like shell edging at the hem, vintage-style button eyes, and a gently tapered shape make it mantel-worthy.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn: Cream or ecru (150 yds)
- Size G/4.0mm crochet hook
- 2 vintage-style buttons (mother-of-pearl or dark wood, ½-inch)
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing
- Embroidery floss in dark brown or black
- Yarn needle, scissors
Step-by-Step
The Body
- Magic ring: 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)
- Round 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)
- Round 3: Sc, 2 sc around. (18 sts)
- Round 4: Sc 2, 2 sc around. (24 sts)
- Continue increasing 6 sts per round until the circle measures 4 inches across.
- Work even for 8 rounds (this forms the rounded head).
- Body flare: Increase 6 sts every 4th round for 3 increase cycles to create a bell shape.
- Work even for 6 rounds.
The Vintage Hem
- Shell edging: Ch 1. Skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sc in next around. Join. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Embroider a small oval mouth using backstitch with dark brown floss.
- Sew the two vintage buttons as eyes above the mouth.
- Stuff firmly from the bottom opening before cinching closed.
- Optional: crochet a tiny lace collar (ch 30, dc in each ch, then shell edging) and tack it around the ghost’s neck.
Display floating from fishing line or perched on a stack of antique books. That slightly crooked button placement is intentional—it adds character.
