Sprouting your own seeds at home is nutritious and fun. These reusable crochet jar covers replace disposable cheesecloth and take just minutes to make.
Materials
- Cotton fingering weight yarn (must be food-safe, un-dyed or natural dye)
- Size D/3.25mm crochet hook
- Mason jar with band ring (wide or regular mouth)
- Scissors
Step-by-Step
- Measure your jar ring. Standard wide-mouth rings have a ~3.5-inch diameter.
- Foundation: Ch 4, join to form ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 11 dc into ring. Join. (12 sts)
- Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 sts)
- Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next around. Join. (36 sts)
- Continue increasing until the circle is slightly larger than your jar ring opening.
- Final round: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Fasten off.
- Place the cover over the jar mouth, screw the ring band over it. Trim any excess.
Use a finer stitch (like mesh stitch) for better drainage while sprouting. These covers are machine washable and last for years.
Crochet pivot note: This same technique makes great reusable produce bags and tea strainers too!
