This penguin hat is a winter favorite. The chunky yarn means it works up quickly, and the ear flaps keep little ears toasty.

Materials

  • Bulky weight (5) yarn: Black (120 yds), White (60 yds), Orange (20 yds)
  • Size K/6.5mm crochet hook
  • 2 small black buttons for eyes
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Step-by-Step

The Hat Body

  1. With black: Magic ring, 8 hdc. Join. (8 sts)
  2. Round 2: 2 hdc in each st. (16 sts)
  3. Round 3: Hdc, 2 hdc around. (24 sts)
  4. Round 4: Hdc 2, 2 hdc around. (32 sts)
  5. Round 5: Hdc 3, 2 hdc around. (40 sts)
  6. Rounds 6–12: Hdc around.
  7. Fasten off.

The Face Panel

  1. With white: Ch 12. Hdc in 3rd ch and across. (10 sts)
  2. Work 8 rows of hdc, shaping into an oval by increasing 1 st at each end for rows 3–5, then decreasing for rows 6–8.
  3. Sew the white face panel to the front center of the hat.

The Beak

  1. With orange: Ch 5. Sc in 2nd ch, hdc, dc, tr. Fasten off.
  2. Fold the triangle in half and sew to the center of the white face panel, point facing down.

Ear Flaps (Make 2)

  1. Count 10 sts from center back on each side. Attach black yarn.
  2. Row 1: Hdc in 10 sts. (10 sts)
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc 6, hdc2tog. (8 sts)
  4. Continue decreasing until 2 sts remain. Fasten off.
  5. Braided ties: Cut 6 strands of black yarn (24 inches each). Pull through the ear flap tip, divide into 3 sections, braid. Knot the end.

Finishing

  1. Sew the black button eyes onto the white face panel.
  2. Weave in all ends.

Fits most children ages 2–6. For larger sizes, increase the initial crown rounds.
