This Christmas tree hat is a full-on festive statement piece. Tiered branches, a chunky brown trunk brim, and a golden star on top make it instantly recognizable.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn: Forest Green (300 yds), Brown (80 yds), Gold (30 yds)
  • Assorted bright mini skeins for ornaments (red, blue, white, purple)
  • Size H/5.0mm crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill (for the star)
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Step-by-Step

The Brim (Tree Trunk)

  1. With brown: Ch 8. Sc in 2nd ch and across. (7 sts)
  2. Work in BLO ribbing (ch 1, turn, sc in BLO across) until piece fits around head snugly (approx 20–22 inches).
  3. Join short ends to form a band. Do not fasten off.

The Tree Body

  1. Attach green: Work sc evenly around the brim edge (approx 60–70 sts). Join.
  2. Increase rounds: Work in sc, increasing 6 sts evenly every 3rd round to create a flared tree shape.
  3. Tier effect: Every 5 rounds, switch to a front-loop-only round to create a ridge that mimics tree branches.
  4. Continue until total height measures 10–12 inches from brim.
  5. Decrease for tip: Decrease 6 sts every other round until 8 sts remain. Fasten off, cinch closed.

Ornament Bobbles

  1. Scatter 8–10 bobble stitches across the tree body using contrast colors.
  2. Bobble stitch: Yo, insert hook, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops. Repeat 4 more times in same st. Yo, pull through all 6 loops.

The Star

  1. With gold: Make 2 identical pentagons (magic ring, 10 sc, then work 5 points around). Stuff lightly, sew together, attach to tree tip.

Wear this to your next ugly sweater party and you’ll win—guaranteed.
