The Crown
- Magic ring: With black, 8 hdc into ring. Join. (8 sts)
- Round 2: 2 hdc in each st. (16 sts)
- Round 3: Hdc, 2 hdc around. (24 sts)
- Continue increasing until crown reaches 7 inches diameter.
- Work even in hdc for 5 inches (hat height).

The Brim
- Reattach yarn at crown edge. Round 1: 2 hdc in each st around.

- Fold-up sides: Using slip stitches on the front and back thirds of the brim, tack the brim up to the crown to create the tricorn shape. Reinforce with plastic canvas cut to shape inside.
Jolly Roger Appliqué
- Skull: With white, magic ring, 8 sc. Increase to 24 sts over 2 rounds. Embroider eye sockets and mouth with black.
- Crossbones: With white, ch 18 for each bone. Sc in 2nd ch and across. Make 2. Sew behind skull.
- Attach the appliqué to the front center of the hat.
Gold Trim
- With gold yarn, surface slip stitch along the brim edge for a captain’s flourish.
Wear with an eye patch and a parrot on your shoulder for the full effect.
