This pencil jar cozy turns any mason jar into a giant #2 pencil. It’s the perfect teacher gift—functional, cute, and handmade.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn: Yellow (60 yds), Pink (15 yds), Tan/beige (10 yds), Silver or light gray (10 yds), Black (5 yds)
  • Size H/5.0mm crochet hook
  • Mason jar (16 oz regular mouth)
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Step-by-Step

The Jar Cozy (Pencil Body)

  1. Measure your jar circumference (approx 10 inches).
  2. With yellow: Ch enough to wrap around jar snugly (approx 32 ch).
  3. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and across. (31 sts)
  4. Rows 2–20: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. This is the main yellow pencil body.
  5. Fasten off.

The Eraser Band

  1. With silver/gray: Reattach at one end. Work 3 rows of sc.
  2. Switch to pink. Work 4 rows of sc for the eraser.
  3. Fasten off.

The Wood Tip

  1. At the opposite end: Attach tan/beige. Work 3 rows of sc.
  2. Switch to black: Work 2 rows of sc for the pencil tip/lead.
  3. Shaping: Next row: decrease 1 st at each end to taper the tip.
  4. Repeat decreases for 2 more rows. Fasten off.

Assembly

  1. Seam the short edges together to form a tube.
  2. Slide the cozy onto a jar. The eraser end goes up.

Fill with fresh pencils, colorful pens, or a bouquet of flowers. Tie a chalkboard-style gift tag around the neck with twine.
