Ear savers keep mask elastic off your ears and dramatically improve comfort during long wear. They’re the perfect stash-buster project and make thoughtful gifts for essential workers.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn (5 yds per saver)
- Size H/5.0mm crochet hook
- 2 buttons (½-inch, sew-through)
- Yarn needle, scissors
Step-by-Step
- Foundation: Ch 6.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. (5 sts)
- Rows 2–28: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (Adjust row count for head size—adult average is 28 rows, or about 6.5 inches unstretched.)
- Buttonholes: Row 29: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts.
- Row 30: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in ch-2 space, sc in last st. Fasten off.
- Repeat buttonhole: On the opposite end, reattach yarn and work identical buttonhole rows (Rows 29–30).
- Sew a button ½ inch from each end on the same side as the buttonholes.
To use: place the saver behind your head, loop mask elastics over each button. Adjust length by adding or removing rows.
Make a dozen in different colors—they’re machine washable and dry quickly.
